Today National Leader Judith Collins announced a multi-billion plan to deliver a suite of transport projects to bust congestion and future-proof Wellington’s transport infrastructure.

The plan includes:

  • Fast-tracking the duplication of the Mt Vic tunnel with a commitment to commence construction no later than the end of 2023
  • Fully-funding congestion-busting roading improvements at the Basin Reserve
  • A commitment to the expansion of the Terrace tunnel
  • Investment in bus priority measures and a bus rapid transit system
  • Undergrounding of SH1 through Te Aro

Wellingtonians will welcome this overdue commitment to our transport needs.

Labour has not completed a single Let’s Get Wellington Moving (LGWM) project for our city. Instead, they’ve served up delays, complex Governance arrangements, unfunded projects and a huge bill for Local Government. They have kicked decisions to touch, defunded much-needed state highways improvements and delayed duplication of the Mt Vic tunnel into the never-never.

National knows Wellington is sick of debate and delay on transport. The plan Judith Collins has announced today is fully-funded, integrated and reflects the Recommended Programme of Investment determined after years of Let’s Get Wellington Moving consultation

I want Wellington to be a vibrant growing city that supports great quality of life. National’s transport plan will make it easier for Wellingtonians to get around – whether by car, bus, foot or bike. It will reduce the time Wellingtonians spend stuck in traffic and ensure our city can cope with a growing population.

I’ve campaigned hard for Wellington to get its fair share of transport infrastructure investment,  including shining a light on Labour’s dodgy deal to delay expansion of the Mt Vic tunnel and speaking up for disaffected Wellington bus users. Today’s package shows National will address the frustrations of Wellingtonians with a delivery plan to construct the modern transport infrastructure our city so badly needs.

I am confident that this plan will propel Wellington into the future. Only a National Government elected in September will get this done.
